MODEL TROUBLESHOOTING
Ollama model won't download or load
The fix depends on where the operation fails. A network/download error, a missing model tag and a runtime memory error are different problems.
1. Confirm the client works
ollama --version
If PowerShell cannot find the command, see the Windows install guide first.
2. Check the exact local model name
ollama list
Use the model name and tag shown in the output. If you are trying a new model, check its official library page and copy the exact command there rather than guessing the tag.
3. Inspect metadata for an installed model
ollama show MODEL:TAG
Replace MODEL:TAG with the exact model entry. This command displays information about the model and does not remove it.
4. Separate download from runtime failures
- Download fails: capture the full error, check network connectivity and retry later if the service may be unavailable.
- Model downloads but will not start: check available memory and whether the model is too large for your system.
- Only one model fails: verify the exact model tag and look for model-specific issues.
5. Don't start by deleting files
Do not delete Ollama's model directory or run cleanup commands just to test a theory. First record the exact error and confirm what is taking up space.
If you post logs in a public issue, inspect them first. Never publish private prompts, credentials, tokens or personal information.
